More Freebies for Windows

Your PC's anti-virus and anti-spyware needs can be taken care of with some pretty good freebies. After listing the applications, I will supply the links for downloading the respective software.

First up is Avira Antivir Personal for Windows which provides basic protection against viruses, worms, Trojans, backdoor programs and dialers. No commercial use of this free software is allowed. Some features of Avira are:
  • Constantly scanning for malicious programs as listed above
  • Monitor actions performed by the operating system as well as the user
  • Promptly reacts when a malicious program is detected
  • Supports Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008
AVG Free Edition for Windows is a free downloadable application that provides basic anti-virus and anti-spyware protection for use on home computers (no commercial use). Some features are:
  • LinkScanner- checks Web pages before opening
  • Compatible with Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP
  • Easy download, installation and use
Avast Home Edition for Windows scans on the PC's initial boot up as well as through standard scanning modes aiding in the removal of stubborn viruses. It provides desktop security and data protection, detecting and removing all forms of malware. As the name implies, no commercial use is allowed. Some features of Avast are:
  • Daily automatic updates
  • Resident shield and self-protection
  • Web and P2P (peer to peer) protection
  • Anti-spy and anti-root kit tool
  • Supports Windows 95/98/Me, 2000, XP, and Vista
